JeLSIM Assessment and Simulation

When you think of online assessment do you think of multiple-choice questions that simply test if students can memorise facts and repeat them? The JeLSIM team believe that online assessment can be more than that and can test more complex skills and accurately measure real potential. We don't see learning and assessment as two distinct processes and are working towards blurring the boundary and assessing students in the same environment in which they learn.

JeLSIM have been working with the PASS-IT team to combine their simulations with online assessment technology and now we are able to quickly and efficiently construct online assessments containing simulations. We haven't just added simulations into the assessment system we have fully integrated them:

The student can submit multiple answers containing any number of parameters from the simulation - this allows assessment of complex multi-staged activity and a more accurate assessment of overall student performance.

In this question students are asked to determine which of the components in the circuit are faulty. They have a notepad to record their deductions. The assessment engine not only records whether they have solved the problem correctly but also how efficiently they solved the problem. Click the image to see the question and some commentary.
